I installed this new starter yesterday on my 1972 Scout II 345 with manual transmission. I am very happy with the result. The starter bolted up perfectly with no issues. This starter is tested at the factory before shipping and the test results were included with the unit. The starter is rated at 1.7 kW. My unit tested at 23 Nm of max torque. The unit is based on the Delco PG260M starter motor which has been in production for some time. This unit performs well in my Scout (I do not have a high compression engine). I appreciate the smaller size as it fits much more easily near my headers. The light weight is a real plus. The unit has a 4-terminal solenoid which is needed on older vehicles to bypass the ballast resistor on start-up. The R terminal can be ignored if not needed. I was disappointed that the S and R terminals were not labeled. But, they are easily identified with a continuity tester (the S terminal will have continuity through the solenoid coil to the case, the R terminal will be open). I found that the S and R terminals were located in the same relative positions as on the original starter.

 

Q: How is this starter as compared to the stock one? Does it provide more torque? I have headers on mine. Plus my factory one is setup with a remote solenoid up near the battery.
A: They work pretty well, similar to a small block Chevy. Personally, with headers I'd get the Hi-Torque Mini -Starter and clock it up one to get the heat away from the starter.
